The 100-Fold Africa Project

Household to continent

The 100-Fold Africa Project is an initiative to empower households and communities in Africa to build robust food systems, feed themselves and earn a living through the use of innovative, efficient and highly productive vegetable gardens. The 100-Fold Garden requires minimal space, water and maintenance and yet can be up to 1000% more productive than a conventional garden. Its versatility lends it to urban, peri-urban and rural Africa alike. The 100-Fold Garden is part of the solution to Africa’s hunger and poverty.

The problem

hunger, poverty & mindsets

Hunger

20% of people in Africa (~280 million) suffer from chronic hunger compared to 10% of the whole world.

Poverty

40% of people in Africa (~490 million) are living in poverty compared to 9% of the whole world.

What is more, the average African family spends 40% of what little income they have on food.

Mindsets

What holds African households and communities back? Mindsets - "not enough space, not enough water, soil not good enough, not enough time."

CAN AFRICAN HOUSEHOLDS GROW THEIR OWN FOOD?

YES THEY CAN!

The solution

100-Fold Gardens

The 100-Fold Garden is a low-tech, efficient vegetable bed that automatically waters the plants directly to the root zone, through capillary action from a reservoir stored beneath the soil. This garden with many advantages allows for the high-density planting of vegetables making it highly productive, up to 1000% more than a conventional vegetable bed. Because it is self-watering and self-governing, once installed and planted, the bed requires very little human attention.

Advantages of

100-Fold Gardens

Innovative

Strategic application of Science towards directly solving Africa’s challenges

Efficient

Makes optimum use of limited space, water and nutrients with minimal ongoing effort

High density

Allows for a plant density of more than 30 vegetable plants per square meter

Self-watering

Water reservoir at the bottom of the bed waters slowly directly to plants’ root zone

Highyly productive

High plant density produces up to 1000% more than conventional

Self-governing

Bed keeps soil, water and nutrients under control and keeps soil moist and friable

Minimal supervision
